George Horton

Luminary coach brings his success and style to Oregon baseball

By Kevin Hudson

When George Horton was announced as the head coach of the revived Oregon baseball program on Sept. 1, 2007, it was considered a major coup in college baseball circles. Horton is one of the luminary coaches in the sport today.

Horton spent 11 seasons at the helm of national power Cal State Fullerton and led the Titans to the 2004 National Championship. During his tenure with the Titans, Horton compiled an overall record of 490-212-1 (.698) and oversaw six appearances in the College World Series, including back-to-back berths in 2006 and 2007 as well as 2003 and 2004.

He was named National Coach of the Year by Baseball America in 2003, and garnered the ABCA and Collegiate Baseball National awards following the Cal State title run in 2004.

Horton was also a five-time Big West Conference Coach of the Year, most recently in 2006 on the heels of his third 50-win season at the Division I level.

Here are some of his thoughts on baseball, his team and his new job as head coach of the Oregon Ducks.
